What Makes Good Sci-Fi?

First, to avoid confusion, I think we need to define our terms for the purposes of this post. By "sci-fi," I mean the more narrow catagory, not the entirety of speculative fiction. I would exclude "fantasy." Yes, yes, the lines blur in some cases, but for the most part if you had to pick a…

Face Turn Towards Positivity

It seems that some of my most popular writing here is when I bitch about the state of sci-fi today. But I don't really want to make this a whine blog. So this week, I'm going to spell out what I do want to see, instead of what is horrible. I can't promise that it…

Howl (2019)

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by memes, obese hysterical soyboobed, dragging themselves through the internet at dawn looking for an angry fix, emptyheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the nuclear family in the machinery of the web, who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up vaping…

Too Dark?

Been getting too dark and too political here recently. Will make some updates about my work in progress: an oppressive dystopia where the only options for escape are to fight a total war to the bitter end, or to flee the planet. On the bright side, there's dogs.

The point is, who will stop me?

First, I'd like to refer you to some background by Jon Del Arroz (@jondelarroz on Twitter): http://thefederalist.com/2019/03/04/indie-sci-fi-authors-upending-traditional-publishing-turned-war/ My sympathies are entirely with 20BooksTo50K. I don't aspire to their volume, but I may still create a Facebook presence to network with people who are just interested in writing books that people want to read. Maybe not,…

Twitter is Terrible

My Twitter account @deanbradleysff is down. It may or may not ever come back, but I'm not making another. I've tried to turn on post sharing to see if this blog post is automatically shared there, so if you arrived from a Twitter link I guess it worked. Their service is horrible, with far more…

Brief update

Friend of a friend had started a fantasy serial that he subsequently abandoned, mostly due to issues with Steemit. I may take over and publish here for free, after lightly editing and publishing his drafts for a couple of installments. I'm not sure I want to take away from my primary WIP, but he's built…

What is the LD50 of Handwavium?

There's a long-running argument in sci-fi circles about what qualifies for the title of "real science fiction," vs science fantasy, space opera, or some other subgenre ghetto intended to prevent Foundation from sharing a shelf with Space Raptor Butt Invasion. But how shall we identify science fiction subgenres, or even alternate genres? The "hardness" of…
